It took one week for the flies (and larvae) and ants to completely break down the flesh. I’m bummed I only have a few tiny ribs. We had a thunderstorm come through and though I protected it from the rain the wind was not kind. I’ve got to come up with a more secure way to monitor decomposition and keep the skeleton intact. And my spouse wasn’t a big fan of me laying it on cardboard on our picnic table. 🫠 #texas #texassnakes #naturestudy Nature study isn’t always pretty, but it IS interesting! A few days ago my son found this snake on the road and carried it home to me (my kids are the best!). It was fully intact on Wednesday when I set it out but you can see what has happened over just a couple of days. Most of the middle has been consumed, the tail area is currently being broken down (see the maggots?!), the head region is still intact. It’s fascinating to watch in real time. You can’t tell at this point, but this is a yellowbellied racer. #texas #texassnakes #naturestudy
