2026 Reading Plan
Nature study isn’t always pretty, but it IS interesting! A few days ago my son found this snake on the road and carried it home to me (my kids are the best!). It was fully intact on Wednesday when I set it out but you can see what has happened over just a couple of days. Most of the middle has been consumed, the tail area is currently being broken down (see the maggots?!), the head region is still intact. It’s fascinating to watch in real time. You can’t tell at this point, but this is a yellowbellied racer. #texas #texassnakes #naturestudy This morning I had a Black-bellied Whistling Duck hanging out on my property. He or she (they are monomorphic so I can’t tell) called like this for several minutes, quite a treat for me! Another one showed up and flew over and further into the trees. Eventually my new friend flew off to meet them. I live close enough to the lake so not unusual for them to be in the area but I don’t typically see them on my property. #texas #texasbirds #birdwatching Snake porn. My spouse surprised two rat snakes doing the deed on the back patio. He tried to get a good video for me but he surprised them and they fled. I managed to pull footage off the security camera. Fingers crossed for snake babies! #texas #texasrstsnakes New books this week. My daughter wants to read Shutter Island (neither of us has ever seen the movie) and Salt Water is a mystery recommended to us by a BN employee, and looks fascinating. And I was happy to see they sell a pocket version of the US Constitution - and for $2 there is no excuse for anyone to not have one.
