In Common – February 2024

I know that February is the shortest month, but it felt even shorter than usual. I think I chose longer books than I should have, considering it’s a shorter month. As a result, I’ve had to let a couple of my selections go into my March reading stack. But I’m on track to finish these titles in March, so no worries!

Each month I am updating my Reading Plan 2024 post – click here if you want to see what I am reading this year. I’ve tagged books I’m currently reading in green and completed books in blue.

As I mentioned last month, I’ve updated my Goodreads account with all of my current reads. I am ahead of schedule for meeting my 2024 Reading Plan, so I am excited for that!

I also mentioned last month that I have committed to listening to one book a month on Audible. I recently finished The Seed Detective and really enjoyed it. The author goes through the history of a variety of plants – if you are a gardener or enjoy cooking, this title will be especially enjoyable.

This month’s Audible selection is The Happiness Hypothesis. This book takes a deeper look into happiness from both a philosophical and a scientific perspective.

I wanted to mention two of my hold-over books that I’ve had to continue into March. First – How Not to Die by Dr. Michael Gregor. Last year I actually read another of his books, How Not to Diet, and let me tell you – this guy is the master of footnotes. He covers so many details whether he is discussing health issues or beneficial food choices. He backs up everything he talks about with extensive foot notes and reports on studies and meta studies from around the world. I know there is a lot of sketchy information out there when it comes to food and our health, but I appreciate that any claims he makes he backs up with footnotes and links.

Another book that I’ve had to continue into March is Cloud Cuckoo Land. This book spans centuries – so far I’ve met two young people living around the time of the fall of Constantinople, and two who live in more modern times in Idaho.

I’m about a third of the way through so far, and just love the book. The connection between the characters is a love for the ancient Greek story Cloud Cuckoo Land written by Antonius Diogenes. It’s such a fascinating story.

For those on the fence on whether to get an Audible membership. I have gotten a lot out of my membership over the years. With the membership level I am at, I get one credit a month, but there are different subscriptions available – and they also have options if you need to pause your membership.

I have Premium Plus, which gives me access to the Audible Plus catalog, which is pretty expansive. So I can listen to audiobooks without using credits. I’ve been happy with the titles available – including children’s titles. Between myself, my spouse and my kids, we really get a lot out of our membership. I’m including a link if you want to do an Audible trial – Try Audible Premium Plus and Get Up to Two Free Audiobooks.
